Between local promoters and the Canyon Club, there are a lot of great shows coming to the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. I don’t need to tell you that it’s pretty great to be able to take in a show locally as opposed to traveling to Agoura Hills, plus they have quite a mix of genres to choose from including Grupo Bronco on Friday, February 24; a Pink Floyd tribute band, Which One’s Pink on Saturday, February 25 (opening acts are Prima Donna Rising & Zack Kirkorkian); the Ventura Music Festival presents Mnozil Brass on Thursday, March 2; The 3 Divas: Pops, Kuh & Jaya on Saturday, March 4; and Los Lobos on Sunday March 12 with special guest Gaby Moreno.

Namba Arts welcomes Ventura City Blitz on Saturday, February 25 for an evening of live rock, and eclectic music from several local artists including Sean Alan, Aaron Burch, The Late Knights, Tyler Indigo and more, then the following weekend, it’s a night of reggae with Bombafiya and Singular Nature on Saturday, March 4 followed up with a Sunday show featuring cool improvisational music from Boom Duo.

The Museum of Ventura County will play host for another brilliant Camerata Pacifica show, Emi Ferguson and Ruckus Play Bach. With a slew of period instruments including theorbo, baroque guitar and bassoon, viola da gamba, and harpsichord, they’ll explore Johann Sebastian Bach’s genius from multiple angles, bringing to life the limitless colors and nuances of his music.

Punk in the Park is coming up fast with Pennywise, Suicidal Tendencies, the Bouncing Souls, Strung Out, Fear, Dwarves and more. There will be two stages (they say set times will not overlap) and the day includes 3 hours of unlimited beer tastings. The event falls on Saturday, March 25 with tickets on sale through the promoter’s website at PunkInThePark.com.

Quick Notes: Tickets are on sale for Night Demon’s record release show at Bombay’s on March 16 with Romper opening; tickets are also on sale for Boots & Brews starring Chris Young on May 7th at Surfer’s Point Live; the reschedule Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore at the Ventura Music Hall is Thursday, February 23; it’s old school punk night with Roman’s Weirdos at Gigi’s on Saturday, February 25; Shawn Jones along with Sam Bolle play the Ojai Underground on Saturday, February 25; Margarita Villa will have music on Sunday, March 26 with CRV (acoustic); Swing Shift play the Sportsman in Camarillo on Sunday February 26; Angelo Moore’s Dr. Madd Vibe and the Missing Links returns to the Grape for a date with Barrelhouse Wailers on Friday, March 3; and The White Buffalo returns to Ventura for a show at the Majestic Ventura Theater on Saturday, March 4;

I’m loving the effort to liven up downtown with businesses staying open later during May and holding special events like a Mom’s night out or a pub crawl. Kudos to the merchants! But of course, you know nothing livens up a place like live music, and you know who has been doing right? Just take a look at the venues in the Ventura Harbor! The Boatyard Pub is officially providing live music seven days a week so between the Boatyard, 805 Wine Bar, the Copa Cubana, Margarita Villa (also seven days a week), and even the Ventura Comedy Club where Tom Scott and LA Express plays time to time, the place is about as lively as you can get!

Nothing goes with warmer weather like a cold brewski, so you won’t want to miss Surf n’ Suds, the beer festival with a surf twist, on Saturday, May 19, at San Buenaventura State Beach. The daylong event not only has over 50 craft breweries, ciders and wine, but they’ll have entertainment from Crosscut 805, DJ Hecktik and After the Smoke.

It’s always a treat when Hi Hat Entertainment brings Billy Vera and the Beaters to town so you’ll want to get your tickets in advance at HiHatEntertainment.com for Friday, May 11, at the Hong Kong Inn. They’ll perform their #1 hit tune, “At this Moment” along with “Millie make some Chili” and other favorites.

It’s awesome that the Museum of Ventura County is offering more live music. On Friday, May 11, it’s “Out of the Ashes: Healing in Story and Song”; the chamber music ensemble, Camerata Pacifica, performs on Sunday, May 13; the weekly Munch series continues Thursdays afternoons where local artists perform at lunch time; and two-time Grammy winner Laurence Juber (lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s Wings) headlines a fundraiser for the Ventura County Library Foundation on May 19. For more information and tickets, visit VenturaMuseum.org.

Quick Notes: cool shows at The Garage include the New Candys from Venice, Italy, on Thursday, May 10, and Jason Steady and the Soft Ponies from Omaha, NE, on Friday, May 11; Topa Mountain Winery in Ojai is hosting a Rose Soiree Event with music from The Salty Suites and The Dales on Saturday, May 12; Grapes and Hops hosts an earlier show on Mother’s day, Sunday, May 13 at 11 am with Stephen Inglis who will perform, “Cut the Dead some Slack” then it’s Dive Bar Steve and Friends at 3 pm; Caught Red Handed plays Plan B Wine Cellars on Sunday, May 13; Oxnard’s Strawberry Festival is over the weekend of May 19-20, and on the Main stage will be Hollywood U2, Highway Starr, Professional Americans, 40oz to Freedom and more; and finally, the Outlaws will be at Discovery on Sunday, May 20 with Crooked Eye Tommy opening.

I’d like to start off with sharing a couple of my favorite music highlights from the past few weeks. First there was Shinedown at the Ventura County Fair; Brent Smith’s vocals are just incredible! And then Squashed Grapes hosted Don Randi on Friday, August 11. Randi was one of the original members of the Wrecking Crew and opened The Baked Potato (famous jazz club in LA) in 1970. He not only played the keyboards like none other, but he shared so many anecdotes from the Wrecking Crew days. Stories about working with Glen Campbell, Neil Diamond, Nancy Sinatra and Brian Wilson, but learning that he actually played on Pet Sounds, and tunes like “Good Vibrations” and “Cracklin’ Rosie” well, it was an amazing evening. Kudos to Squashed Grapes for their continuous support of jazz and bringing artists like this to our town. Yeah, I confess I dusted off my copy of Pet Sounds; it really holds up as one of the top LPs of all time.

Attention Deadheads! The Museum of Ventura County will host a special concert on Saturday, August 26 with the Grateful Dead tribute band Cubensis as they recreate the era’s unique and eclectic styles of rock, psychedelia and experimental music. Doors open at 4 p.m. The concert runs from 5-8 p.m. Admission is $15/members, $20/non-members. A no-host bar will be available.

Spencer Makenzie’s End of Summer Block Party will be held the final weekend of August with free music. On Friday, August 26, you can catch Rey Fresco, then on Saturday, August 27, it will be Highway Starr followed by Mandex. During the day, it’s their annual cornhole tournament called “The Throw Down” pulling in contestants from all over the U.S. competing for over $32,000 in cash payouts. There will be 192 teams competing so get out and cheer them on!

PRIDE Festival returns to Promenade Park this year on Saturday, August 19. All proceeds raised will go to sustain the Community Resource Center serving the LGBTQ community here in Ventura County. Entertainment will include Sean Wolf G & the Country Bear Jamboree, DJ Joseph with Music Box and Michelle Rosenblum. Lady Bunny will be on hand as Pride’s emcee.

Music Under the Stars continues with its summer concert series. Coming up Saturday, August 19, it’s a tribute to Oingo Boingo with the band Dead Man’s Party; and then Saturday, August 26, it’s a night of Motown sound with the Blues Breeze Band which has already sold out. For ticket information on all remaining shows go to the City’s website (www.CityofVentura.ca.gov).

Quick Notes: Goodnight Kiss EP release party will be held at Bombay’s Saturday, August 19; Fallen Saints will be opening for Great White at the Canyon Club on Friday, August 25; Agent Orange takes over Discovery on Sunday, August 27;
