He waxed nostalgic about his time in the 805, his first show at the Ventura Theater and what the band&#8217;s philosophy is all about when it comes their music.<\/p>\n<p>Just a sample:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/auYsEu0RY9A\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly Hoganson:\u00a0 How you doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric Rachmany:\u00a0 I\u2019m Great!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 How&#8217;s the tour going so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 It\u2019s been great, we had a little bit of time off we\u2019re recording our next album for the last couple of weeks and then we just played a couple shows in Santa Cruz. Then we have these Ventura shows and then we have a couple shows in Orange County.\u00a0 We start our big tour in February.\u00a0 That\u2019s like our winter tour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 I saw your schedule, it&#8217;s pretty gnarly.\u00a0 It&#8217;s exciting you&#8217;re criss-crossing the country then you&#8217;re also making time to go to Thailand?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Right Yeah, we have a festival to play in Thailand on March 1st<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Have you ever been?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 I\u2019ve been to visit but never to play.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 That&#8217;s cool.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Yeah<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 I was on your website and you have the video &#8220;Skys the Limit&#8221; posted.\u00a0 I really like that song by the way.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Oh Cool<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 You have a great voice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Thank you<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 It was directed by Marley (bass player) and\u00a0 it looks like you shot a lot in Isla Vista.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 We did, we thought it was probably a good idea to go back to where we got started and just kind of feel the vibe of Isla Vista while we were filming the video.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Whenever you come back to the 805, is it nostalgic?\u00a0 Does it bring back memories for you guys?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Definitely, you know we spent a pretty substantial amount of time here both while we were in college and then actually after we all finished school we all stayed in the Santa Barbara area for a few years. Although we weren\u2019t here a lot of the time we were touring this was still our home base and you know when we got dispersed to different parts of California now but Santa Barbara will always be our home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Now when you got started in &#8217;04, does that seem like a lifetime ago? Or does it seem like yesterday?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 It feels like yesterday.\u00a0 It really does.\u00a0 Time has flown by it\u2019s really hard to believe it\u2019s almost 10 years ago. That\u2019s actually mind blowing to think about. We\u2019re just having so much fun with what we\u2019re doing.\u00a0 We love performing we love playing and recording music and when you have fun doing time flies by that\u2019s the truth, haha.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Haha! \u00a0 Well looking back through the years and where you&#8217;re at now is the journey what you thought it would be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 You know I think since I was a little kid I always thought the music I was apart of would be exposed to the world somehow.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t really know what it would take to do it. So I feel like that has happened and I\u2019m thrilled that I\u2019m playing music for peoples.\u00a0 I can do this for a living. But I didn\u2019t really know what it would feel like or the steps we would have to take to get our music out to people around the world you know?\u00a0 I think with Rebelution we played so many shows starting from Isla Vista, playing small clubs to festivals, outdoor venues and amphitheaters now I think we\u2019ve done so many shows that we are confident in what we\u2019re doing and although 10 years have gone by very fast it\u2019s been a nice, slow progression for the band so I think in that regard we feel very comfortable in what we\u2019re doing.\u00a0 It\u2019s not like we\u2019ve had this huge jump in success.\u00a0 You know we\u2019re an independent band and we do everything our selves. We\u2019re kind of rising slowly but surely. We\u2019re really happy with that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 That goes to my next question in that you guys are pretty DIY.\u00a0 Is that the direction where you think the music business is going?\u00a0 Bands are pretty much going to do their own thing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 You know, I think the music that we play isn\u2019t really typical for the music industry latch on to.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I think a lot of the bands we\u2019ve come up with both in the Santa Barbara area and around the country that play similar music to us, are all independent as well.\u00a0 I think the bands just like us we do it for the love of the music, we do it to spread a positive message, to bring happiness to both ourselves and to the crowd, to the people.\u00a0 We like staying independent there\u2019s no pressure,\u00a0 we write music that we love and that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about making money for us it\u2019s about you know staying positive and keeping a big smile on our faces as we get older. You only live once and we\u2019re trying to live that way. Haha<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Haha, there is that philosophy that if you do what you love and eventually you&#8217;ll reap the rewards.\u00a0 So it sounds like you&#8217;re time is at that point.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Yeah, and I understand it\u2019s really hard to make a living out of this business and the music industry is really cut throat and that\u2019s another reason to stay independent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Right.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 And It\u2019s also I don\u2019t need a reminder as to why I\u2019m doing this.\u00a0 We get out there and we play the music that we love and it\u2019s always been that way since day one.\u00a0 And while we\u2019re happy doing what we\u2019re doing there\u2019s no reason to change our philosophy, change our sound, we do it because we love it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 I\u2019ve always been fascinated by how a group of friends get together and form a band.\u00a0 How did it come about that you guys in college decided to hey one day, let&#8217;s make music.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Yep, I was always into music when I was a kid. I started on piano then moved to guitar. Once I got to Santa Barbara City College I took this songwriting class. I just fell in love with it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 The first thing they make you do in class is play one of your own songs.\u00a0 I\u2019d never done that before and I never thought of myself as a singer.\u00a0 I always thought of myself as a musician\/guitar player and I got up and sang a song and I listened to everybody else and I was able to form some friends and felt really comfortable at it.\u00a0 And it was through that music dept at City College that I met our bass player Marley and we both shared a love for reggae music and we figured that out in a relatively short amount of time.\u00a0 Then he found our drummer Wes in another music class us three got together and then we met our keyboardist Rory along the way and then we were jamming a lot of classic reggae tunes like Sublime, this was the kind of music we all related to at the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Sure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 And then we played a show wow this is the most fun we\u2019ve ever had and we just kept on doing it.\u00a0 Next thing you know we\u2019re writing original music and I think it\u2019s because of that one songwriting class that I gained that courage to you know sing, because I\u2019d never really done that before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Well you&#8217;ve got a great voice.\u00a0 I love your voice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Thank you<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Any tips for up and comers, that you know you would recommend?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Just what I was touching on earlier you just have to love what you\u2019re doing and not think about the rewards, like you were saying if you love what you\u2019re doing the rewards will come.\u00a0 It may not be like a monetary thing.\u00a0 It\u2019s important to just play music for the love of playing music.\u00a0 You should never really forget that.\u00a0 It is I understand it\u2019s very difficult to be a musician full time but yeah, but from my experience it is possible to be an independent band and to play music for a living.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Sure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 We worked really hard played multiple shows.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s important to get out there and perform live.\u00a0 Nowadays it\u2019s very difficult.\u00a0 The major record label would never go over with us basically what we do.\u00a0 We\u2019ve always wanted to do it ourselves.\u00a0 It\u2019s definitely possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 When you listen to music, when you&#8217;re on the road, who&#8217;s on your iPod?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Haha good question.\u00a0 To tell you the truth I\u2019ve been writing so much because we\u2019re preparing for this next album so um I\u2019m not really sure who I listen to.\u00a0 Obviously I\u2019m a big fan of reggae music, once in a while I\u2019ll check out what music is coming out of Jamaica and around the world.\u00a0 A lot of the times I\u2019ll start listening to stuff I used to listen to whether it\u2019s hip hop, rap, metal, punk rock, there\u2019s folk music, oldies, I\u2019m a big Beatles, I love everything.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly: The last record that you guys put out, &#8220;Peace of Mind&#8221;, what was the evolution of and the thought process of putting out a triple record? (A regular record, an acoustic version and a dub version). That&#8217;s pretty ambitious.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/venturarocks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/rebelution-peace-of-mind-album.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1873\" alt=\"Peace of Mind album\" src=\"http:\/\/venturarocks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/rebelution-peace-of-mind-album.jpg\" width=\"280\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"http:\/\/venturarocks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/rebelution-peace-of-mind-album.jpg 280w, http:\/\/venturarocks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/rebelution-peace-of-mind-album-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a>Eric:\u00a0 Yeah,\u00a0 I think it was our love for different types of music that we decided to do that.\u00a0 We always talked about doing an acoustic album but the idea stems from our good friend and manager Dean who said what if we released it all together?\u00a0 I thought it was a great idea and I love playing acoustic.\u00a0 It was relatively easy when we went in the studio we were just free with it and had the acoustic album in a few days.\u00a0 I think we\u2019ll try and do something like that in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Well it&#8217;s a great record and I appreciate the acoustic aspect of it.\u00a0 To see what it sounds like without all the bells and whistles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Yeah, haha.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 You guys did a really good job.\u00a0 I did see that you posted some pictures that you guys are in the studio now.\u00a0 Going to hear anything new and different?\u00a0 Or pretty much, you follow the same formula, but try and change it up here and there?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Yeah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Going to be along the same lines?\u00a0 Or are you bringing in more cow bell?\u00a0 Haha.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Haha, yeah well it\u2019s actually confidential information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Haha!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 It\u2019s really hard to explain. PEACE OF MIND was probably our most creative album to date.\u00a0 It had a lot of different styles of music.\u00a0 This one I think is different but it\u2019s similar than that it\u2019s got a different style.\u00a0 I really can\u2019t describe it.\u00a0 But I think everybody will be happy. There\u2019s something for everyone I think is the best way to describe it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 That&#8217;s cool.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 But I think it\u2019s the most thrilled I\u2019ve been about recording an album ever.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s got to say something.\u00a0 But like I said earlier we love doing what we do.\u00a0 It feels good the way we recorded this.\u00a0\u00a0 The vibe and the energy that went into it, I think people will be into it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 I\u2019m sure they will.\u00a0 You never let your audiences down and that&#8217;s why you guys are so popular.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got a sold out concert tonight (Monday, December 30, 2013 Ventura Theater).\u00a0 That&#8217;s exciting.\u00a0 Two nights at the Ventura Theater.\u00a0 You must be excited about that.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Definitely, yeah, a little funny story.\u00a0 The first time we played the Theater we shared an opening slot with Iration they kind of started in Isla Vista as well.\u00a0 Whichever band sold the most tickets was the one that would get direct support from the artist Yellowman (headliner) I \u2018m pretty sure Yellowman didn\u2019t bring anybody.\u00a0 The Theater relied on us and Iration to sell all the tickets. It\u2019s funny just thinking about that and fast forwarding to right now and playing 2 nights at Ventura Theater and how we remember our first start there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 It must be a great feeling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Yes, it is. It\u2019s a legendary spot for us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Eddy Numbskull is bringing you back to Ventura.\u00a0 You guys collaborate a lot? He&#8217;s a good friend.\u00a0 A great guy that puts on a quality show.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Definitely, we always had a pretty good relationship with Eddy. For a long time now, and he\u2019s been promoting our shows for several years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 I\u00a0 see you&#8217;re super popular in Guam.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Oh Guam. Yeah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 It&#8217;s funny because my parents are from Guam.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Really?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Yeah, I wanted to know if you had any of the local cuisine while there. Haha.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 We had a lot of amazing fish while I was there.\u00a0 I forget what other local stuff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Red rice is big, BBQ Ribs&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Yeah, Guam, the first time we went to Guam one of our songs was a big hit.\u00a0 I think it was \u201cSafe and Sound\u201d and it\u2019s still to this day probably one of the most amazing shows we ever played because we were a small band from Isla Vista and all of a sudden our music became this big hit on this island and we played a show for about 6000 people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 That&#8217;s awesome.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 That was an amazing feeling definitely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 And they love to party and they love to dance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 For sure.\u00a0 We went to a small Chamorro village and it was spectacular going to this small village and seeing how people had been living for decades and the culture. It was amazing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 A lot of great musicians, bands started in the 805 some still make their home here like Ozomotli, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, all those guys came up through the 805.\u00a0 What is it about this part of California that makes it such a fertile ground for live music?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Yeah, I think the college town is big for us.\u00a0 Because there are a lot of people we played to. Isla Vista all jam packed in a small community.\u00a0 All the students were young and they were hungry for music.\u00a0 Typically it\u2019s the younger crowd that comes out to see live music.\u00a0 They are searching for different types of music.\u00a0 A lot of people visit Santa Barbara. It\u2019s a beautiful place.\u00a0 You have the coast, the ocean the mountains.\u00a0 You can see all sides.\u00a0 Santa Barbara is a perfect way to describe California. Santa Barbara and Ventura too is both warm and cold.\u00a0 I think that California in general is a melting pot.\u00a0 There are so many different kinds of people here.\u00a0 It\u2019s also a spot that you get a lot of people from down south and up north coming to this area.\u00a0 It\u2019s a place that makes people happy.\u00a0 You want to rejoice.\u00a0 You want to be surrounded by the arts,\u00a0 the music, dancing.\u00a0\u00a0 In that regard it\u2019s a great place for that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 Now both nights are all ages shows.\u00a0 Is it important for you to always get the music out to all ages?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Yeah, I like to it\u2019s preferably to a 21 and up show.\u00a0 We think our music relates to all different kinds of people. It\u2019s funny I have grandparents that listen to our music and little kids, like our cousins, 2, 3 and 4 years old that fuss when our music doesn\u2019t come on in the car.\u00a0 Yeah, I think we\u2019re trying to spread a positive message and there is a lot of negative music out there we hope we\u2019re getting people on the right track.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Polly:\u00a0 I really love your music.\u00a0 It is feel good music and it is for the ages.\u00a0 Any New Year&#8217;s resolutions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eric:\u00a0 Haha, that\u2019s a good question.\u00a0 I got asked that question last night.\u00a0 Just keep writing music.
